YOGA

Private lessons are tailored to your interest and skill level. With your input, we will build your class based on your needs and goals. A class can range from 1 – 2 hours and will likely include physical postures (asanas) and strengthening exercises, followed by a deep relaxation (Savasana) to close. Other limbs of yogic practice such as Pranayama (breathing techniques), Yoga Nidra (a form of conscious relaxation), and various forms of meditation may also be included. Classes may be adapted to all levels, whether you are a complete beginner or have much experience.

Most requested forms of yoga include:

Ashtanga Primary Series

A dynamic, strong sequence of poses to build strength, flexibility, and mental concentration. Emphasis is placed on the breath, Drishti (focal point), and the Bandhas (energetic ‘locks’ in the body). The Ashtanga sequence is a fixed series of poses, allowing the practitioner to memorize the sequence, and through repetition turn the physical practice into a moving meditation.

Vinyasa Flow

Vinyasa classes may be gentle or dynamic, and consist of a series of poses linked through the breath to target specific goals or purposes. Unlike Ashtanga, a Vinyasa class will change the sequence of poses each time. There is an element of creativity and surprise (as well as challenge) that can be a fun way to discover your body.

Yin Yoga

A non-flow type of yoga, where poses are held between 1 – 10 minutes and include the extensive use of props to support the body. Heavily based on Daoist theory of energetic meridians, the long holds of Yin Yoga target the ‘yin’ areas of the body: joints, ligaments, tendons, and connective tissue (fascia), which require slow static holds to lengthen and unblock, rather than targeting the muscles. With time, the flow of energy through these meridians increases, while tension and stiffness of the body decreases. An element of self awareness and meditation is also cultivated, as one is asked to stay aware of sensations and sit with any emotions or mental states that may arise. A deeply relaxing and transformative practice.
